Remarks on Podarcis lilfordi rodriquezi (L. MÜLLER, 1927), an extinct subspecies of the Balearic lizard

MIKE ZAWADZKI, October 2010

Summary

The endemic Podarcis lilfordi rodriquezi from the little island Isla Ratas in the Bay of Mahón (Menorca, Balearic Islands, Spain) has become extinct in the 1930s. According to PEREZ-MELLADO & SALAVADOR (1988) there are only four specimens of this subspecies left in collections today. A new examination of those specimens showed that they actually belong to Podarcis pityusensis ratae from the Isla Ratas southeast off the coast of Ibiza.

1. Introduction

Podarcis lilfordi rodriquezi was described by L. MÜLLER (1927) based on a series of specimens collected in 1903 by RODRIQUEZ Y FEMENIAS on the island Isla Ratas in the Bay of Mahón (Menorca, Balearic Islands, Spain). Podarcis lilfordi rodriquezi became extinct when the little island Isla Ratas was dynamited between 1934–1936 in order to widen the small passage in the bay of Mahón for bigger ships (COMPTE SART 1968). EISENTRAUT visited the island Isla Ratas in 1928 and gave a description of the lizards and the island (EISENTRAUT 1949). The knowledge of living-coloration is only based on the publications of MÜLLER (1927, 1928) and EISENTRAUT (1949) (see top image EISENTRAUT 1949).

According to PEREZ-MELLADO & SALVADOR (1988) the holotype – an adult female– (Zoologische Staatssammlung München, collection L. MÜLLER, Nr. 1540) was destroyed during World War II. The same authors pointed out that only four specimens of P. l. rodriquezi are available in collections today. These four specimens, all adult males, are deposited at the Zoologisches Forschungsinstitut und Museum A. Koenig (ZFMK), Bonn, Germany. PEREZ-MELLADO & SALVADOR (1988) stated that in spite of the small number of specimens studied, P. l. rodriquezi is undoubtedly a valid subspecies, strongly divergent with respect to the rest of the Menorcan populations. According to these authors P. l. rodriquezi is a giant form with body and head much larger than in any of the other Menorcan populations. It also has the lowest number of dorsal scales within the studied material. Strangely enough this statement is incompatible with the descriptions of P. l. rodriquezi made by MÜLLER (1927) and EISENTRAUT (1949).

In this paper I report my findings for P. l. rodriquezi and the astonishing variation in the small number of data sets of morphometric and meristic characters available, especially the characters that appear to be of taxonomic value such as the number of scales around midbody, number of gular scales, snout-vent lenght, headlenght and headwidth.

2. Material and Methods

To clarify the taxonomic state of the four specimens in the ZFMK labeled as „Lacerta lilfordi rodriquezi, Balearen, Isla Ratas, 14.4.1930“ (ZFMK 11970–11973), I compared their morphometric and meristic characters with the corresponding descriptions made by L. MÜLLER (1927) and EISENTRAUT (1949).

The knowledge of data sets concerning morphometric and meristic characters is limited to the description of the holotype (an adult female) of this subspecies (MÜLLER 1927), five adult males and three females (EISENTRAUt 1949) and the four adult males deposited in the ZFMK (PEREZ-MELLADO & SALVADOR 1988).

Furthermore I compared morphometric and meristic characters from the male lizards of all the Menorcan Podarcis lilfordi populations from the work of PEREZ-MELLADO & SALVADOR (1988) with the data of P. l. rodriquezi published by EISENTRAUT (1949) and MÜLLER (1927), respectively snout-vent-lenght, the number of dorsal scales around midbody, number of gular scales, head lenght and head width.

3. Results

A first look at the four specimens of P. l. rodriquezi deposited at the ZFMK clearly demonstrated that they do not fit the characterization of this subspecies made by L. MÜLLER (1927) and EISENTRAUT (1949). The number of dorsalia around midbody, the number of gularia and the measurements of the snout-vent lenght, head lenght and head width of the male lizards clearly sets the Isla Ratas population apart from the rest of the Menorcan Podarcis lilfordi populations (see PEREZ-MELLADO & SALVADOR 1988).

PEREZ-MELLADO & SALVADOR (1988) came to the conclusion that the population of the Isla Ratas is a well-defined subspecies, because most of the data concerning its biometry and folidosis are placed at one end of the overall variation range observed in the Menorcan archipelago. Unfortunately they have not included the respective data from specimens from the Isla de Ratas published by EISENTRAUT (1949).

The most significant difference is found in the number of dorsal scales around midbody. EISENTRAUT (1949) determined numbers between 73–86 (mean value 80.6) dorsalia for five adult males of P. l. rodriquezi. Compared to the rest of the Menorcan populations this value is within the range of P. lilfordi. The corresponding values of the four ZFMK specimens vary between 60–64 (mean value 62.25). With such low number of dorsal scales around midbody the four ZFMK specimens are clearly not assignable to Podarcis lilfordi but show great similarity to Podarcis pityusensis.

Both species can easily be seperated from each other by means of scale count across the midbody. P. lilfordi usually has 70–90 and P. pityusensis 55–68 scales around the midbody (EISENTRAUT 1949).

Tabel 1. Comparison of the snout-vent length (SVL), number of dorsal scales around midbody (dorsalia) and number of gular scales (gularia) in males from P. lilfordi rodriquezi (see EISENTRAUT 1949), the four specimens from the ZFMK declared as „P. l. rodriquezi“ (see PEREZ-MELLADO & SALVADOR 1988) and from P. pityusensis ratae (see SALVADOR 1984). The range is given in parantheses.

4. Discussion

The four specimens from the ZFMK are the largest lizards and also have the longest and the widest heads but at the same time show the lowest number of scales around midbody as well as the lowest mean in the number of gular scales within the Menorcan populations of P. lilfordi. The low number of dorsal scales clearly show that these lizards are not Podarcis lilfordi.

The series of the four preserved specimens (ZFMK 11970–11973) is labeled as „Lacerta lilfordi rodriquezi, Balearen, Isla Ratas, 14.4.1930“, but there is no explicit note that this „Isla Ratas“ is located in the bay of Mahòn, Menorca.

There is in fact another Isla Ratas southeast off the coast of Eivissa (Pityusic Islands, Spain). It is a small island that inhabits the subspecies Podarcis pityusensis ratae (EISENTRAUT, 1928). If we compare the snout-vent lenght, the number of dorsal scales around midbody and the number of gular scales (Tabel 1) of the four specimens from the ZFMK declared as „P. l. rodriquezi“ it is quite obvious that they have much more in common with P. pityusensis ratae than with P. lilfordi rodriquezi.

I addressed an inquiry about any further possible information on the origin of the four P. l. rodriquezi to the ZFMK. Although the recent collection-catalogue contains all registrations, they were copied within the 1960s from the original (pre WWII) catalogue. The registration in the recent catalogue reads as follows: „Lacerta Lilfordi rodriguezi (ratae), Isla Ratas (leg. H. GRÜN) 14.4.1930“. In the Pre-World-War II catalogue the entry reads: „Lacerta Lilfordi ratae, EISENTR., Isla de Rattas, 14.IV.1930, leg. H. GRÜN, 6 Stück“ (W. BISCHOFF in lit.).

The other two specimens (ZFMK 11854 and 11855) from that series of six lizards are correctly labeled as „Podarcis pityusensis ratae, Spanien: Isla Ratas, 1930“ but the rest (ZFMK 11970–11973) has been seperated from them and were accidentally wrongly labelled as „Podarcis lilfordi rodriquezi“.

FRANZEN & GLAW (2007) recently published a picture of the holotype of Podarcis lilfordi rodriquezi and remarked that only the two paratypes ZSM (SLM) 2269 are lost, but not the holotype.

The correct diagnosis for P. l. rodriquezi therefore is only given by MÜLLER (1927) and EISENTRAUT (1949): Large subspecies, males with 61–78 mm SVL (x = 67.2), females 59–67 mm SVL (x = 64) and high number of dorsal scales around midbody (males 73–86, x = 80.6; females 71–80, x = 76.5). For infomation on coloration of Podarcis lilfordi rodriquezi see MÜLLER (1927, 1928) and EISENTRAUT (1949) as well as the shown color plate.

Koenig in Bonn (ZFMK).
